Peter Gisseman joins Seclight

Peter Gisseman is a new addition to the team building Seclight, with a focus on IT and information security. Here he sketches out a checklist for anyone wanting to get started on their security journey.

Peter brings substantial experience in IT security and information security, IT infrastructure and enterprise architecture. He has held roles as IT security architect, CISO, CIO and IT manager. Peter has mainly worked in industries such as fintech and retail, but also medical technology and the defence industry.

At Seclight, Peter has in a short time established a systematic further-training programme for senior consultants who want to become Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), a certification he himself helps develop through the organisation ISC2.

Three quick questions for Peter:

What's the most important thing to keep in mind when moving forward with sustainable IT security in a complex environment?

— It depends on where you stand today and what challenges you're facing, not least from laws and regulations, says Peter, sketching out a few steps.

1. Find out where you stand today — What does security look like right now?
2. What's the threat landscape?
3. What external requirements apply?
4. Combine your current state, threat landscape and external requirements into a roadmap.
5. Get buy-in. Secure support from decision-makers and management. Fund the implementation.
6. Commit yourself and the organisation to taking ownership of, and delivering on, your roadmap. Evaluate and update the plan as you go. Keep building support. Train everyone involved.
7. Test and practise regularly. IT security and information security are practical and concrete.
8. Celebrate every win, as many as you can, along the way. Make sure everyone on the security journey is challenged and grows.

What are you most excited about in joining Seclight?

— Having new colleagues who bring energy and are passionate about security. There's real drive at Seclight, so this can be really good and fun! We can see that Seclight genuinely creates change for our clients.

What do you do when you're not working?

— Spend time with my family, or I'm out with the dogs, friends, and hunting. Or sleeping!
